Social cohesion declines among Turkish Cypriots
Analysis suggests a decline in virtues such as cooperation and solidarity among Turkish Cypriots compared to the period before 1974. The weakening of social bonds has led to an increase in negative emotions, including self-centeredness, resentment, and envy.
This social shift is attributed to three primary factors: distorted modernization, the narcissism of small differences, and the reflections of the Cyprus problem. The concept of the ‘narcissism of small differences’ is used to explain how individuals or groups emphasize minor distinctions to create alienation and hostility. Furthermore, distorted modernization and patronage systems—where institutions rely on connections rather than merit—are cited as drivers of consumerist competition and social devaluation.
