Social commentary on family dynamics and dependency in Vietnam
Recent social discussions in Vietnam have highlighted two distinct forms of family conflict and dependency. One case follows a woman named Mai, who ended a decade of marriage after her mother-in-law's extreme controlling behavior and verbal abuse. The conflict peaked when the mother-in-law traveled to Mai's parental home to insult her, treating her like a 'defective product' following Mai's miscarriage and decision to visit her own family during the Lunar New Year.
Separately, observations have been made regarding a modern form of financial dependency among young adults. Unlike traditional 'parasitic' behavior where individuals remain idle at home, a new trend involves young graduates using academic or career advancement—such as studying for civil service exams, pursuing postgraduate degrees, or preparing for English proficiency tests—as a pretext to remain financially dependent on their parents for extended periods.
