Social connection challenges for young adults post-college

Recent data and observations highlight the challenges young adults face in maintaining social connections after leaving the structured environment of college. While college provides consistent opportunities for interaction through classes and dormitories, graduation often leads to increased feelings of loneliness and disconnection. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, young adults are among the age groups most susceptible to these feelings.

A survey conducted by CNBC and SurveyMonkey found that 75% of college students make friends in classes, and 74% of on-campus residents form connections in dorms. However, Gen Z expresses a desire for colleges to facilitate social skill development through clubs and activities more than previous generations.

There are also growing concerns regarding the impact of technology on interpersonal abilities. Approximately 55% of Americans believe that the use of AI tools, such as chatbots, has negatively affected in-person social skills. Additionally, many respondents identified poor active listening and shortened attention spans as significant weaknesses in younger generations.
