Global seismic activity raises concerns over potential megathrust earthquakes

Recent global seismic activity has renewed scientific focus on the “Big One,” a term used to describe potentially devastating megathrust earthquakes in high-risk tectonic regions.

In North America, significant tension has been identified in the San Andreas Fault system, with some models suggesting tectonic loads are at their highest levels in 1,000 years. A rupture connecting the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults could result in an estimated magnitude 7.5 earthquake, affecting nearly 13 million people in California.

Another major area of concern is the Cascadia Subduction Zone, stretching from northern California to Vancouver Island. This region, where the Juan de Fuca and Gorda plates subduct beneath the North American Plate, last experienced a magnitude 9 event in 1700. Experts note that while these faults have recurrence periods often exceeding 200 to 300 years, the exact timing of future events remains unpredictable.

In Latin America, a series of significant tremors occurred in 2026, including a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia and a magnitude 7.2 event in Peru. While these events are part of the Pacific tectonic system, scientists emphasize that they are not necessarily interconnected.
