Social Health Authority reduces medical costs for Kenyan families

Beneficiaries of the Social Health Authority (SHA) in Kenya have reported significant relief regarding medical expenses, noting that the scheme helps reduce out-of-pocket costs for various services.

In regions such as Embu, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Mathira, families have shared accounts of using SHA for maternity care, emergency admissions, scans, and medication. For example, one resident in Embu reported that SHA covered approximately Ksh30,000 of a delivery bill, leaving him to contribute only Ksh10,000. Another resident in Sagana noted that the registration process was straightforward and provided immediate coverage following his wife's involvement in a road accident.

Users highlighted that the coverage helps prevent the need for community fundraisers, often referred to as harambees, to settle hospital bills. While expressing satisfaction with the financial support, beneficiaries have called for continued government investment in hospital infrastructure and medicine supplies to ensure services remain accessible closer to home.
