Social inequality and labor informality in Tamaulipas

Social inequality in Tamaulipas is closely linked to employment quality, family income, and educational opportunities. While formal employment provides access to social security, retirement savings, and healthcare, a significant portion of the population relies on informal work, which is characterized by variable income and minimal labor protections.

National data from INEGI’s National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) indicates that approximately 55% of employed individuals in Mexico work under informal conditions. This informality presents challenges such as unemployment, underemployment, and child labor, which impact economic development and family well-being.

In Tamaulipas, key sectors including manufacturing, commerce, border logistics, services, port activities, and energy generate employment opportunities. However, these benefits are not distributed evenly across the region, with notable disparities existing between border industrial corridors, the Tampico-Altamira-Madero conurbation, and rural areas.
