Australia implements social media ban for children under 16

Australia has become the first nation to implement legislation requiring social media platforms to prevent children under the age of 16 from holding accounts. Under the new law, platforms must take “reasonable steps” to verify user ages or face significant financial penalties.

The initiative aims to mitigate documented risks to minors, including mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, bullying, and exposure to predators. Research cited indicates that more than three hours of daily social media use can double the risk of mental health problems in children.

While it remains early to determine the effectiveness of the policy, the global implications are significant. If other nations adopt similar age-restriction models, it could fundamentally alter how future generations communicate and access information.
