Social media algorithms and AI content drive consumer manipulation

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are increasingly using psychological triggers and artificial intelligence to drive consumer behavior and impulse purchases. Algorithms are designed to evoke constant desire by repeatedly showing users content that creates a sense of perceived need rather than actual necessity. Marketing strategies often focus on selling an idealized version of oneself rather than the product itself, leading to short-lived satisfaction.

Researchers have identified a specific trend involving AI-generated “before and after” weight loss videos. These videos, which often lack labels identifying them as synthetic, depict unrealistic physical transformations to promote fitness apps and weight loss supplements. Experts warn that these deceptive clips often falsely compare unverified supplements to prescription medications like Ozempic. This phenomenon primarily targets vulnerable demographics, including adolescent girls, young women, and postpartum mothers, posing risks to both mental health and consumer protection.
