Social media algorithms linked to global psychological manipulation and unrest

Social media algorithms are increasingly being identified as tools for large-scale psychological manipulation, blurring the lines between virtual interactions and real-world consequences. By prioritizing inflammatory content, platforms such as TikTok, Threads, and Facebook have been linked to fueling civil unrest and violence among youth in several regions, including Kenya, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

In the United Kingdom, misinformation regarding a stabbing incident in Southport in July 2024 triggered widespread racial riots and attacks on law enforcement. Similarly, in Asia, sexual deepfake crimes on Telegram have caused widespread psychological crises in South Korean schools, while gender-based hate movements on Reddit and Discord have been associated with self-harm and school violence in the United States and Europe.

Historical precedents also show the danger of digital manipulation; between 2017 and 2018, manipulated videos and false rumors regarding religion and child abductions incited violent mob actions in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and India.
