Social media debate erupts over traveler etiquette and public rules in Hong Kong

A social media debate has emerged regarding public conduct and adherence to regulations in Hong Kong. One discussion involves service industry professionals, including flight attendants and ground staff, sharing negative experiences with travelers from Hong Kong. These workers reported instances of rudeness, verbal abuse, and entitlement, with some comparing the behavior to a lack of basic manners.

In a separate incident, a tourist from Chengdu, China, expressed frustration on social media regarding Hong Kong’s strict public order laws. The traveler described feeling “too restricted” by requirements to use pedestrian crossings and prohibitions against littering or spitting, which can result in fines of up to 3,000 HKD and 2,000 HKD, respectively.

Netizens from both Hong Kong and mainland China have largely criticized the traveler’s stance, arguing that following traffic laws and maintaining cleanliness are fundamental civic duties that apply globally. Some discussions also touched upon the consistency of service attitudes toward different language speakers in the city.
