Social media ‘ferritin face’ trend warns against medical self-diagnosis

A social media trend known as ‘ferritin face’ is circulating on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, suggesting that specific facial features can indicate iron deficiency. Proponents of the trend claim that signs such as dark circles under the eyes, pale complexion, dull skin, and hair thinning are visible indicators of low ferritin levels.

Medical experts warn that ‘ferritin face’ is not a recognized medical diagnosis. While iron deficiency can lead to symptoms like paleness or hair loss, these physical traits are highly non-specific. They can be caused by numerous other factors, including stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, or individual genetic characteristics.

Health professionals emphasize that a proper diagnosis of iron levels requires medical consultation and blood tests to measure ferritin, a protein that stores iron. Relying on social media for self-diagnosis poses risks, including the potential for inappropriate self-treatment or significant delays in seeking necessary medical care for underlying conditions.
