Social media health trends drive interest in iron deficiency and misinformation

Social media platforms like TikTok are increasingly influencing public health perceptions through viral trends. One such phenomenon is ‘ferritin face’, a term used by online users to describe visual markers of low iron levels, such as pale lips, dark circles under the eyes, dull skin, and thinning hair.

Medical experts caution that while these visual cues can accompany iron deficiency or anemia, they are not formal diagnoses. Physical symptoms may also include spoon-shaped nails, cracks at the corners of the mouth, or a sore tongue. Other systemic indicators include fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Experts note that individuals can have low ferritin levels without exhibiting any visible signs.

In response to the rise of digital health information, the BBC is launching a new season of ‘Clickbait Clinic’. Featuring Dr Nighat Arif, Dr Alex George, and Stacey Dooley, the series investigates viral health trends to distinguish evidence-based advice from misinformation. Dr Arif noted that the gap between online hype and medical reality can impact patient safety, as many patients now bring information found online into medical consultations.
