Social media impact on youth daily life and mental health
Social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube have become integral to the daily lives of young people, serving as primary channels for communication, entertainment, and information. In Germany, studies indicate that most adolescents spend several hours every day on these platforms, with usage often beginning as early as primary school age.
While these digital spaces offer benefits—including social networking, creative expression, and access to current information—they also present significant risks. Concerns include psychological strain caused by constant social comparison, which can lead to self-doubt and depression, particularly among young girls. Additionally, the addictive nature of these platforms, driven by notifications and algorithmic content, poses a risk to users with developing media literacy.
