Social media impacts political discourse and information accuracy in Cameroon and Senegal
In Cameroon, political discourse is increasingly dominated by social media clashes and personal disputes rather than substantive policy debates. Critics argue that this focus on morality, rumors, and unproven leaks serves as a distraction from critical national issues, including deteriorating road infrastructure, gas shortages, high living costs, and mass unemployment.
Similarly, in Senegal, there are concerns regarding the “magnification of terror” caused by social media. While digital platforms democratize information and aid citizen vigilance, they also facilitate the spread of misleading content. The use of old or geographically displaced videos can create a false perception of national disasters, potentially exaggerating the scale of localized incidents.
