Social Media Influencers Face Legal Risks and Heavy Workloads
Sales conducted through social‑media platforms have surged, prompting experts to warn that participants risk serious fiscal and legal penalties for operating in the informal economy. The expanding gig of online product sales brings scrutiny over unregistered trade and tax obligations.
Travel influencers, despite appearing to live a carefree lifestyle, actually shoulder a demanding production schedule and a fragmented income model. German creators Biggi Bauer (41) and Florian Westermann (46) illustrate how revenue now stems from affiliate links, brand partnerships, banner ads, digital publications, photography courses and YouTube advertising. Westermann notes that YouTube shares about 55 % of ad revenue with creators, and the pair reports six‑figure annual earnings. They also stress that “free‑trip” barter arrangements are not universally sustainable, as such benefits can trigger tax liabilities. Together, the two pieces highlight the growing complexity and regulatory exposure facing the influencer economy.
