Social media organic reach declines amid rising advertising spend
Organic reach on major social media platforms is facing significant challenges as algorithms increasingly prioritize immediate engagement and paid advertisements. By mid-2026, Instagram reported an average reach rate of 4.90%, marking a 14% year-over-year decrease.
As platforms shift toward a mix of user-generated content and advertising to maintain attention and revenue, brands are finding it harder to reach existing followers without paid support. Global social media advertising spend is projected to increase by 13.6% in 2025, reaching approximately USD $277 billion. This growth reflects a trend where social media ads are expected to account for 32.1% of total digital advertising expenditure.
On platforms like TikTok and YouTube, visibility remains tied to early activity signals. While TikTok's 'For You' feed can provide initial bursts of views to new accounts, the increasing volume of competing content makes sustained organic growth difficult.
