Social media platforms implement AI content moderation and labeling
Social media platforms are implementing various strategies to manage the rise of generative artificial intelligence, though methods and accuracy levels vary. Snapchat has updated its Spotlight algorithm to demote wholly AI-generated videos, stripping them of recommendation eligibility to prioritize human-centric content. While the platform allows AI for light editing, color grading, or visual enhancement, it will deprioritize content where no human or physical media was involved in the creation process, such as hyperrealistic AI avatars.
Other major platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels primarily utilize mandatory labeling and disclosure settings rather than algorithmic demotion. However, these detection systems face significant challenges. There are growing concerns regarding AI detection errors, where human-made work is incorrectly flagged as synthetic. Such inaccuracies can cause reputational damage to professional creators, including photographers and filmmakers, whose businesses rely on perceived authenticity and originality.
