Social media impact on teen mental health drives policy discussions

Research and policy discussions are intensifying regarding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health and safety. In Mexico, the Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making has engaged with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration to discuss how technology design affects children and to inform national policy regarding digital platforms.

Studies published in JAMA Pediatrics highlight that teenagers encounter various online harms, including cyberbullying, exposure to violent imagery, and unwanted sexual content. Research suggests that short-form video platforms may be linked to more severe body image concerns, indicating that specific app designs influence user well-being. While social media can offer connection and support, it also presents risks related to mood, sleep, and self-confidence.

In response to industry pressures and parental concerns, platforms like Instagram have previously paused projects such as “Instagram Kids” to further consult with experts, parents, and regulators. The goal of such pauses is to develop age-appropriate experiences that prioritize parental supervision and mitigate the risks associated with younger users accessing mainstream social media apps.
