Social media 'rage bait' content provokes stress, experts warn

Rage bait refers to online posts designed solely to provoke anger, frustration or disbelief, encouraging users to comment, share or otherwise engage. Algorithms often prioritize such content, giving it greater visibility on platforms like TikTok and other social networks.

Psychologists explain that this type of content triggers the body’s “fight‑or‑flight” response, raising cortisol and adrenaline, accelerating heart rate and breathing. Continuous exposure can sustain elevated stress levels, leading to irritability, anxiety and sleep problems.

Experts advise users to block or unfollow accounts that consistently post rage bait, to curate feeds with more informative or positive sources, and to take regular breaks from social media to allow the nervous system to recover.
