Social media trends and the evolution of online fashion communication

The rise of social media has transformed how fashion and individuality are expressed online. While concerns often focus on whether social media makes everyone dress the same, research suggests the greater impact lies in the standardized ways people communicate style.

Online fashion culture is increasingly driven by labels and micro-communities, such as ‘clean girl’ or ‘coquette.’ These aesthetics often associate specific looks with unrealistic lifestyles. The rapid circulation of these labels via social media can lead to oversaturation, where a trend becomes a mass-marketed aesthetic as soon as it gains popularity.

Beyond specific garments, social media circulates recognizable modes of presentation. This includes standardized settings like city streets or cafes, specific poses, and captions designed to perform effortlessness. While the individual content of posts may change, the underlying format and the speed at which cultural meanings circulate have become increasingly uniform.
