Social media trends shape teenage identity and aesthetics

Teenagers are increasingly influenced by digital trends on social media, which manifest both as social pressures and evolving cultural aesthetics. A 2025 Pew Research Center survey of 1,391 American teenagers and parents found that 31% of teens feel pressure to post popular content, while 45% believe they spend excessive time on social media. Despite these pressures, 74% of respondents noted that social media helps them connect with friends, and 63% value it as a creative outlet.

On platforms like TikTok, a new aesthetic trend is emerging that romanticizes the late 2000s and early 2010s. Moving away from highly polished content, users are embracing unpolished, low-resolution imagery, vintage digital camera photography, and indie music. This movement, often characterized by a lack of professional curation, utilizes accessible markers of belonging such as thrift-store styles and casual flash photography to create a sense of millennial optimism.
