Social media use linked to decreased self-confidence and physical strain

Psychologists warn that social media use can silently erode self-confidence through a phenomenon known as social comparison. Constant access to the curated, successful lives of others can trigger upward comparison, where users feel inferior regarding their own careers, appearances, or lifestyles, negatively impacting psychological well-being.

Additionally, the habit of “doomscrolling”—continuously consuming distressing news or content—can lead to physical ailments. Prolonged screen time is linked to digital eye strain, which causes symptoms such as dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and neck or shoulder pain. To mitigate these effects, experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and take regular breaks from all digital devices.
