Social Security 2027 COLA announcement expected October 14
Social Security beneficiaries are awaiting the announcement of the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which is expected to be one of the largest in recent years. The Social Security Administration is scheduled to release the official figure on October 14, following the publication of the September inflation report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Experts and advocacy groups have provided varying projections for the increase. The Senior Citizens League predicts a 3.5 percent rise, which would increase the average benefit payment from $1,941.76 to $2,009.72. AARP has projected a slightly higher increase of 3.6 percent.
Despite these potential gains, analysts warn that the adjustment may not provide sufficient relief for retirees. Critics note that COLAs are designed to keep pace with inflation rather than increase purchasing power, and because the adjustment is based on historical data, it may not account for price surges occurring after the calculation period. Additionally, long-term concerns persist regarding the Social Security funding pool, which federal projections suggest could face depletion by 2032.
