Social Security 2027 COLA Forecast Rises to Around 3.8% Amid Inflation Pressures

Analysts project that the 2027 cost‑of‑living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security beneficiaries will rise to roughly 3.8%–3.9%, up from this year’s 2.8%. The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) estimates a 3.9% increase, while the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) projects 3.8%, noting a possible range of 3% to 4.5% depending on inflation trends.

The April jobs report and recent spikes in inflation—driven partly by higher oil prices and geopolitical tensions such as the Iran conflict—have fueled the upward revision. Analysts warn that higher COLAs without corresponding wage growth could widen the program’s budget deficit and accelerate the projected depletion of the Social Security trust fund, currently expected around 2032. Proposals under discussion include capping benefits for high‑income earners and other reforms to improve solvency.
