Social Security Act marks 91st anniversary

The Social Security Act marks its 91st anniversary, a milestone recognized by organizations such as the National Consumers League (NCL) and AARP. The program was established in 1935 following advocacy by figures like Frances Perkins, who served as the first female U.S. Cabinet member and Secretary of Labor.

NCL CEO Sally Greenberg noted that the program has become a vital safety net, helping millions of Americans manage essentials during retirement, disability, or the loss of a breadwinner. Currently, 22 million Americans rely entirely on Social Security for their income.

In Alabama, the program serves as a significant economic driver. Approximately 1.2 million residents receive benefits, generating an estimated $23.6 billion in annual economic activity. Data indicates that Social Security helps lift roughly 338,000 Alabamians out of poverty.
