Social Security Act signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. Established during the Great Depression as part of the New Deal, the act was designed to provide economic security for Americans during old age and periods of financial hardship.

Over the decades, the program has expanded to include benefits for retirees, the unemployed, and individuals with disabilities, as well as support for families and children. While the system has provided stability for millions for over 90 years, it currently faces ongoing discussions regarding its long-term financial sustainability and solvency.
