US Social Security expands fast-track disability list

The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) has expanded its Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program by adding 14 new medical conditions to its fast-track disability benefits list. This expansion brings the total number of recognized conditions under the program to 314.

The CAL initiative is designed to accelerate the approval process for individuals suffering from severe, life-changing illnesses, reducing the bureaucratic wait times that can often last months or years. The newly added conditions include a variety of rare pediatric and neurological disorders, as well as aggressive forms of cancer, such as primary cardiac sarcoma and uveal melanoma with metastases.

SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated that the initiative aims to “cut through red tape” and provide urgent support to those facing devastating diagnoses. Since the program's inception in 2008, more than 1.2 million people have successfully accessed benefits through this expedited process.
