Social Security Administration conducts targeted beneficiary verifications

The Social Security Administration conducts specific verification reviews to confirm beneficiary identity and eligibility. These checks are targeted at specific files rather than being a universal inspection for all retirees.

One such review, the Medicare Non-Utilization Project, targets Title II beneficiaries aged 90 or older residing in the United States who have not used Medicare Part A or Part B for at least three years. Another procedure, the Centenarian Project, focuses on very elderly beneficiaries living outside the United States to ensure they remain eligible for benefits.

While telephone interviews are the preferred method for these verifications, face-to-face interviews may occur if communication difficulties arise or if the agency deems it necessary. In certain instances, these interviews may take place at the beneficiary's home, often scheduled via a specific letter identified as SSA-L501.
