Social Security Administration promotes digital data and card services
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is promoting its digital resources, including an Open Data Portal and an online replacement card service.
The Open Data Portal serves as a public federal repository designed to meet open-data requirements. It provides access to various datasets, such as disability claims, retirement and survivor beneficiary statistics, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program data, and a baby names database dating back to 1880. These assets are available via downloadable files, APIs, or related reports to assist in analyzing demographic and economic trends.
Additionally, the SSA recommends using its online portal for requesting replacement Social Security cards. The agency notes that while many institutions only require a Social Security number, those needing a physical card can use the digital service for faster, 24/7 access. The online process includes identity verification and typically results in the card arriving by mail in less than two weeks. For complex updates, such as legal name changes, the portal also allows users to schedule in-person appointments.
