Social security and emergency aid regulations updated in Portugal and Brazil

In Portugal, the Social Security Institute has clarified that employment status does not automatically disqualify parents from receiving monthly family allowances. These benefits are intended to offset costs related to the support and education of children and young people. The specific amounts depend on the household's total income, the age of the child, and family composition. For children aged 36 months or younger, monthly payments range from 88.43 to 190.98 euros depending on the income bracket. For older children, the amounts decrease according to established scales.

In Brazil, the Regional Uniformization Chamber of the Federal Special Courts of the 4th Region ruled that single-parent female providers are entitled to double installments of the Residual Emergency Aid. This decision follows a legal dispute where a mother with two minor dependents was initially denied the double quota. The court interpreted Law 13.982/2020, which established social protection measures during the pandemic, stating that a single-parent provider should receive two quotas of the aid.
