Social security and financial challenges in Slovakia and Hungary
In Slovakia, the Social Insurance Agency is facing a surge in applications, with over 15,000 requests received in recent months. Following the distribution of pension forecasts, many citizens have discovered gaps in their recorded insurance periods. Individuals are submitting old documents, such as military records and employment certificates, to rectify these discrepancies, though processing times can extend for months as the agency verifies data with former employers or archives.
Simultaneously, a survey conducted by Focus for Partners highlights significant financial strain on Slovakian households. The study reveals that the average person has only 4,200 euros in savings, far below the 8,550 euros they deem necessary for security. Approximately 17 percent of households are left with no money after paying bills, and 4 percent are accumulating debt due to the costs of utilities, food, and loan repayments.
In Hungary, local governments are managing social firewood support programs. Eligibility and application processes are determined by local municipal regulations rather than automatic distribution. Recent changes have expanded eligibility to include municipalities with populations between 5,000 and 20,000 residents, such as Polgár in Hajdú-Bihar county.
