Social Security: Benefit eligibility and payment schedules

Social Security benefit eligibility and payment schedules are determined by specific criteria, including earnings, age, and birth dates. To qualify for benefits, individuals must accumulate credits based on their annual earnings. In 2026, the earnings required for one credit is $1,890, with a maximum of four credits possible per year. A total of 40 credits is the maximum required for any benefit. Retirement benefits can be claimed starting at age 62, though monthly amounts are reduced by approximately 30 percent for those who do not wait until full retirement age.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a separate program for individuals with limited income and resources who are aged 65 or older, blind, or disabled. SSI eligibility requires U.S. citizenship or certain eligible non-citizen status and residency in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Mariana Islands.

Payment schedules for October 2026 follow a birthday-based system for many beneficiaries. Those born between the 1st and 10th of any month receive payments on Wednesday, October 14. Subsequent payments are scheduled for October 21 (birthdays 11–20) and October 28 (birthdays 21–31). This birthday schedule does not apply to those who received benefits before May 1997 or those receiving both Social Security and SSI. For SSI recipients, October payments were scheduled for October 1, with the next payment on October 30.
