Social Security COLA estimates suggest potential 3.5% increase
Estimates for the upcoming Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) suggest a potential increase to help retirees maintain purchasing power against inflation. The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) currently predicts a 3.5% COLA. If this estimate holds, the average benefit for retired workers—which stood at $2,087.52 as of August—would increase by approximately $73.06 per month, or $877 annually.
The COLA is determined by changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). While a higher COLA provides more monthly income, it may not result in increased discretionary spending. Rising costs for everyday necessities such as groceries, utilities, and insurance often offset the benefit increase. Additionally, for many recipients, rising Medicare Part B premiums and deductibles can further reduce the net impact of the adjustment on their available funds.
