Social Security benefits to increase by 3.6% in 2027
The Social Security Administration has announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027, affecting approximately 72 million beneficiaries. This increase, which begins in January 2027, is expected to raise the average monthly retirement benefit by roughly $75. For the 7.3 million people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the increased payments are scheduled to begin on December 31, 2026.
While the adjustment is larger than the 2.8% increase seen in early 2026, experts and advocacy groups note that it may not fully offset the rising costs of housing, food, medical expenses, and utilities. For dual enrollees, the benefit may be further impacted by changes in Medicare Part B premiums, which are automatically deducted from Social Security benefits.
Long-term concerns regarding the program's solvency persist. Some analysts warn that without congressional intervention to address the declining ratio of workers to retirees, the Social Security Trust Fund could face significant depletion by 2032, potentially leading to mandatory benefit reductions.
