Social security coverage updates in Mexico and Guatemala
In Mexico, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) offers 'Modalidad 10,' a voluntary incorporation scheme for independent workers. This program allows self-employed individuals to access comprehensive social security benefits similar to salaried employees. Coverage includes risks at work, sickness and maternity, disability and life, retirement, and childcare. Additionally, workers can choose to contribute to Infonavit to access housing credits.
In Guatemala, the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) provides specific maternity and healthcare benefits for the dependents of affiliates. Under current regulations, beneficiaries include spouses or partners and children. For male affiliates, partners who have lived with the worker for at least one year and are economically dependent may access maternity services, including medical assistance, hospitalization, and medication.
