Social Security trust funds projected to face depletion by 2034

Social Security faces significant long-term funding challenges, with the program’s combined trust funds projected to be depleted by 2034. According to the 2026 annual trustees’ report, the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) fund is expected to run dry in the fourth quarter of 2032, which is one quarter earlier than previous forecasts.

If the OASI fund is exhausted, retirees could face an automatic 22 per cent reduction in benefits. A subsequent depletion of the combined OASI and Disability Insurance funds in 2034 would trigger a 17 per cent cut across the entire program. The 75-year shortfall has grown by 16 per cent, reaching approximately 4.42 per cent of taxable payroll.

Analysts attribute much of this deterioration to demographic shifts, including lower projected fertility rates and lower assumed immigration levels. The system’s transition from a reserve-based model to a pay-as-you-go model has left it vulnerable to an aging population and a shrinking workforce relative to retirees. Experts suggest that these uncertainties underscore the importance of independent retirement savings through vehicles like 401(k) plans and Roth IRAs.
