Social Security offers funeral expense reimbursements and survivor pensions

Social Security provides financial relief for funeral expenses following the death of a family member. Eligible individuals can receive a reimbursement of up to 1,611.39 euros, an amount corresponding to three times the Social Support Index.

To qualify for this reimbursement, the request must be submitted within 90 days of the death. This specific benefit is only available if no one else is entitled to a death benefit, as families cannot claim both simultaneously. This subsidy is paid directly to spouses, children, or other close relatives.

Additionally, there is a survivor pension available for those whose deceased relative made contributions to Social Security. Unlike the one-time funeral reimbursement, this is a monthly payment determined by the deceased person's pension amount and the degree of kinship. Eligible recipients may include spouses, children, and in certain cases, ascendants. Notably, even an unborn baby may be entitled to a survivor pension if a parent dies before birth.
