Social Security 2027 COLA announcement expected October 14
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on October 14, 2026, following the release of September inflation data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Current projections from The Senior Citizens League and other analysts suggest an increase between 3.4% and 3.6%, which would be one of the largest adjustments in recent decades.
If a 3.5% COLA is confirmed, beneficiaries could see significant changes to their monthly income. For example, a recipient of $2,000 per month would see an increase of approximately $70. Spousal benefits are projected to potentially surpass the $1,000 monthly milestone for the first time. Disability recipients (SSDI) are also expected to see a notable boost, marking one of the largest raises since 2023.
While the increase provides relief against inflation, analysts note several complicating factors. Some experts suggest that the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) may not fully capture the specific inflation experienced by retirees, particularly in healthcare and housing. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the long-term financial stability of the Social Security program, with some reports noting that larger adjustments could increase pressure on the program's funding.
