Spain Social Security pension spending reaches record 14,470 million euros

Spain's Social Security system reached a record monthly expenditure of 14,470.4 million euros in August for contributory pensions, representing a 6.2% increase compared to the previous year. This surge includes the 2026 pension revaluation, which provides a general increase of 2.7% in line with the average IPC.

The total number of pension recipients in the country rose to 10,535,869, a 1.5% increase from August 2025. The average monthly pension across all categories stood at 1,373.44 euros, up 4.6% year-on-year. Specifically, the average retirement pension reached 1,574.9 euros.

Regional data shows varying trends. In Castilla y León, the average pension is 1,376.28 euros, with León hosting the highest volume of beneficiaries. In Castilla-La Mancha, the average retirement pension is 1,486.98 euros, which remains 88 euros below the national average. In La Rioja, the average pension grew by nearly 5% to 1,362.7 euros. Other regions like Andalusia and the Canary Islands also report figures that fluctuate around the national average.
