Social security protocols for medical incapacity in Mexico and Guatemala

Social security institutions in Mexico and Guatemala provide specific protocols for workers facing temporary medical incapacities.

In Mexico, the IMSS issues subsequent incapacity certificates to document the continuation of a medical condition. Unlike an initial incapacity certificate, which marks the start of a period where a worker cannot perform duties, a subsequent certificate is issued when medical personnel determine that the worker requires additional time away from work for the same condition.

In Guatemala, the IGSS provides economic subsidies to workers suspended due to illness, accidents, or maternity. These subsidies are intended to replace lost wages. Payments are typically processed around the 8th, 18th, and 28th of each month, subject to file verification and employer reports. Once authorized, these subsidies are collected exclusively through Banco Industrial agencies.
