Global travel costs rise as airfares and fuel prices surge

Rising transport, accommodation, and fuel costs are significantly impacting global travel budgets for 2026. In the United States, petrol prices increased by 28.4% and airline fares rose by 20.7% between April 2025 and April 2026. Similarly, economy airfares have climbed approximately 21% so far in 2026, with further hikes anticipated in 2027 due to ongoing fuel costs.

These financial pressures are reshaping consumer behavior. Travelers are increasingly shortening trips, choosing closer destinations, and delaying bookings. In Australia, hotel occupancy in Melbourne is nearly 10% lower than the previous year, while Sydney hotel bookings are running 7% behind last year's figures.

In the airline sector, payment processing costs reached US$24.5 billion in 2025, a 10.4% increase from 2023, outstripping the growth of travel sales. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is exploring lower-cost digital payment solutions to help airlines manage these rising operational expenses.
