Social Security survivor benefits guide for US families
Following the death of a family member, survivors may be eligible for Social Security benefits in the United States, though these payments are not transferred automatically and are not considered part of an inheritance. The Social Security Administration (SSA) evaluates each case individually based on the deceased person's work history and contributions, as well as the age, relationship, and specific circumstances of the claimant.
To begin the process, the death must be reported to the SSA, and a formal application for survivor benefits must be submitted. While funeral homes often report deaths if they have the individual's Social Security number, it is recommended that family members confirm the notification has been made.
Potential claimants include surviving spouses, generally aged 60 or older (or 50 if disabled), or those caring for a child of the deceased. Former spouses may also qualify if the marriage lasted at least 10 years.
