Spain Social Security mandates electronic notifications for medical leave
As of September 1, 2026, the Spanish Social Security system has implemented new regulations requiring mandatory electronic notifications for specific groups. This change, established by Order ISM/541/2026, expands the list of individuals who must interact digitally with the administration via the Social Security Electronic Office (SEDESS).
The new mandate specifically includes applicants and recipients of temporary disability benefits (medical leave), permanent disability, and non-disabling permanent injuries. Previously, this obligation primarily applied to self-employed individuals and those receiving benefits related to childbirth or pregnancy.
Under the new rules, official communications such as medical discharge notices, documentation requests, and benefit resolutions will no longer be sent via postal mail. Instead, they will be available digitally. While the administration may send alerts via SMS or email, the official legal notification is only considered served once it is available in the electronic office. Citizens must use digital identification methods, such as Cl@ve, a digital certificate, or an electronic DNI, to access these documents. Failure to monitor the electronic mailbox could result in missed deadlines for appeals or the loss of benefits.
Separately, a new requirement has also been introduced for Spanish pensioners residing abroad, who must now provide proof of life twice a year via the VIVESS mobile application to ensure the continuity of their payments.
