Social Security trust fund projected to deplete by 2032
The Social Security and Medicare Trustees' 2026 report indicates that the trust fund used for retirement and survivor benefits is projected to be depleted within six years, by 2032.
If the trust fund is exhausted, Social Security would not disappear entirely, as the program is primarily funded through ongoing payroll taxes from current employees and employers. However, without legislative intervention, these taxes would only cover approximately 78 percent of scheduled benefits, resulting in a 22 percent reduction in planned payments.
Potential solutions to address the funding gap include increasing revenues by raising payroll tax rates or adjusting the taxable maximum cap, or reducing costs by raising the full retirement age and modifying Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). Similar funding crises were addressed in the early 1980s through a combination of increased retirement ages and accelerated payroll tax increases.
