Guatemala TSE sets resignation deadlines for 2027 election candidates

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Guatemala has officially established the legal deadlines and resignation dates for public officials seeking elective office in the 2027 General Elections. Through Agreement 316-2026, the tribunal aims to ensure equity and constitutional compliance.

Key requirements include:

• Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates: Ministers of State must submit an irrevocable resignation by December 26, 2026, to meet the six-month requirement before the elections.

• Deputies: Candidates for the Congress of the Republic must resign by October 21, 2026. This restriction also applies to those seeking seats in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

• Mayors: Public employees or officials aspiring to the office of mayor must resign at least three months before the official election call.

• Military Personnel: Members of the Guatemalan Army must have been in a state of discharge or retirement for at least five years prior to the formal election call.
