European Union urges Ukraine to accelerate reforms for aid

The European Union is urging Ukraine to accelerate necessary reforms to unlock billions of euros in financial assistance. According to preliminary conclusions for an upcoming summit, the release of funds—including part of a 90 billion euro loan—is contingent upon Kyiv implementing anti-corruption and fiscal measures.

Ukraine faces a significant budget deficit, estimated by Prime Minister Serhiy Koreckyj at approximately 27 billion dollars. While Kyiv has requested faster access to funds to support defense and drone procurement, EU officials, including Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kosová, emphasized that reforms are essential to build trust and ensure aid is used effectively.

Discussions also involve the use of frozen Russian assets to cover the deficit, though some member states, such as Belgium, remain opposed. Meanwhile, Ukraine has noted that delays in external aid are forcing the postponement of non-priority expenditures, such as reconstruction projects.
