Socialdemokraterna proposes new labor policy to reduce unemployment

The Swedish Social Democratic Party (Socialdemokraterna) has introduced a new policy framework termed ‘a new labor line’ (en ny arbetslinje) aimed at reducing unemployment. Party leader Magdalena Andersson stated that everyone capable of working should do so, criticizing recent labor market developments as a fundamental failure.

The proposal includes several key initiatives:

• A program to combat youth unemployment through increased trainee positions and job contracts at state agencies. • A significant expansion of vocational and labor market training, developed in collaboration with businesses. • A ‘job ladder’ (jobbtrappa) concept that combines strict requirements with opportunities to transition from benefits to employment. This includes mandatory participation in programs as a condition for receiving social assistance. • A ‘restart’ for the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen) and the maintenance of a strong unemployment insurance system (a-kassa).

Ardalan Shekarabi, the party’s labor market spokesperson, emphasized that municipalities should be able to direct individuals receiving social assistance toward employment services with clear requirements to accept available jobs.
