Socialist Left Party proposes phasing out Palantir contracts in Norway
The Socialist Left Party (SV) is proposing that the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) halt new contracts with the American technology company Palantir in the public sector. The proposal includes mapping existing usage and creating a plan to phase out current agreements.
SV spokesperson Marthe Hammer criticized the company, noting its surveillance technology was developed in close cooperation with the military. Concerns were raised regarding Palantir’s involvement with the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hammer also highlighted risks to Norway’s digital sovereignty and the potential for uncritical integration of such technology into public infrastructure.
Currently, the Norwegian police have spent over 100 million NOK on Palantir software, though they previously decided to phase it out by 2027. Other Norwegian users include DNV. The party noted that other nations, such as France, have previously reduced cooperation with the company to avoid over-reliance on U.S. technology.
