Socialist Parties in US and Europe See Divergent Fortunes

In the United States, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have increased their political influence, securing control of city governments in New York, Seattle and pursuing a platform that calls for eliminating the Senate, nationalizing corporations and expanding workers' rights ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

Across Europe, traditional social‑democratic parties are experiencing a sharp decline. In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned after internal party turmoil and electoral setbacks. In Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez faces mounting pressure as his PSOE slides in polls. Germany’s historic SPD fell to fourth place behind the far‑right AfD, while centre‑left parties in France and Italy remain marginalised.

These contrasting trends indicate a growing polarization of left‑wing politics, with a more radical socialist surge in the US and a weakening of mainstream social democracy throughout much of Europe.
