Socialist Party of Serbia faces instability after Branko Ružić expulsion

The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) is facing internal instability following the expulsion of Vice President Branko Ružić. This move has triggered a wave of resignations within the party.

Mateja Ranković resigned from all party functions, including his positions on the SPS Main Board and the youth executive council. Ranković described the expulsion of Ružić as a “collapse of dignity and integrity” for the party, alleging that party organs have become mere formalities used to implement decisions lacking legality and legitimacy through censorship and threats.

Ružić, who served as the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government from 2017 to 2020, has called for the establishment of independent institutions in Serbia, including prosecutors, judges, and police who operate without political interference. His comments emphasized the need for accountability and a country where young people can thrive through honest work.

Following Ružić's expulsion, political speculation has arisen regarding whether he might disclose information concerning alleged manipulations of voter lists by the ruling authorities. While opposition figures suggest such disclosures would require significant courage, Ružić has remained focused on the necessity of anti-corruption measures and institutional independence.
